Understanding Sidelink Intercept (Bluetooth, WiFi, V2X, IoT and more) for Criminal Investigators Millions of gadgets and devices are embedding sidelink capabilities that enable smartphones, cars, IOT devices – or just about any modern device - to peer directly over Bluetooth, wifi and V2X interfaces and exchange files, voice, messages, stream data or otherwise communicate. From a law enforcement perspective, intercepting and investigating sidelinked communications is huge challenge compared to traditional communication services – as with traditional communications services investigators could rely on the respective network operator (e.g., mobile, landline) to provide metadata and/or communications content via LI interfaces. However, when devices “sidelink,” there are no network operators or systems to query. The notion of a “service provider” does not exist. This leaves LEAs completely blind to location, identity, metadata, communications content, call patterns, etc. In fact, the Chinese government recently made Apple disable their airdrop service for exactly this reason, as they had no intercept capability. This webinar will look at the challenges of investigating sidelink technologies. Specifically, how are LEAs going to collect critical usage data? What options exist to support lawful investigations? Topics covered include:
