Keep using your IMSI Catchers and Direction Finders in the 5G SA Era

With the introduction of 5G, the 3GPP decided to improve subscribers’ privacy by designing an encrypted protocol architecture that protects against the use of IMSI catchers. Although various workarounds exist to unmask user identities (e.g., downgrading and/or exploiting mis-configured 5G SA networks), it quickly became clear that a “future proof” and solid solution would be required in order for law enforcement to track suspects using their direction-finding tools and capabilities.

To meet this requirement, the 3GPP and ETSI designed a new “identifier association” reporting function that help LEAs correlate temporary identifiers collected over the air interface, and match them to permanent identifiers that enable location tracking. This webinar will provide an update on the 5G identifier association capabilities - providing a thorough overview on this new LEA interface, the impact it will have on the workflow of law enforcement, and the integration requirements that needs to be in place with CSPs.

Specific topics covered include:

- Understanding the 5G privacy architecture that limits IMSI catchers
- Details on the Identifier Association interface, approach, and identity mapping solution
- Prerequisites for successful implementation and integration
- Challenges and issues with the warrant interface
- Timelines for introduction, industry status and future work

Time will be left for Q&A and discussion.
