Locating and tracking devices by MAC address/equipment IDs, advertising IDs and app-based SDKs: limitations and emerging privacy measures from device manufacturers (e.g., Apple/Google)

MAC addresses, advertisement IDs and equipment identifiers have long been an effective means to tracking user devices without requiring the help from ISPs or wireless operators. However, Apple and Google are proactively taking steps to obfuscate, tumble and/or block these identifiers, which in turn undermines many traditional location approaches. Further, operating systems APIs are being redesigned to restrict direct application access to GPS location, network and device information, thereby limitingthird-party applications from collecting location information useful to law enforcement.

This webinar will look at the subject of MAC address, advertisement identifiers, network interface and GPS-based approaches to collecting location information. Topics addressed include:

  1. Basics of MAC and network addresses and how they can be used to track location
  2. Differences between MAC-based address correlation and network-based location (specifically mobile networks)
  3. How to correlate MAC addresses with user identity and location
  4. Limitations of MAC-based location and address harvesting
  5. Beyond MAC addresses: how smartphones apps use MAC, SSIDs and advertiser ID to gather and correlate location information
  6. Example app/SDK-based techniques for location correlation: TikTok, XMODE
  7. OS vendor approaches to limiting MAC and GPS-based location techniques
  8. Example
